Ambassador® Rolling thin film oven (Effect to heat and air on a moving film of Asphalt - ASTM D 2872 - 04 The Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO) is used to measure the effect of heat and air on a moving film of semi-solid asphaltic material and is an indicator of the approximate change in properties during conventional hot-mixing. The results of this treatment are determined from measurements of the asphalt properties before and after the test. The RTFO is a standardized test method, and the results of the test are used to predict the performance of asphalt binders in pavements. The RTFO consists of a chamber that is heated to a specified temperature, typically 163°C (325°F). A carriage inside the chamber rotates slowly, and glass bottles containing the bitumen binder are placed on the carriage. As the carriage rotates, the bitumen binder is exposed to the heat and air in the chamber. The test is typically conducted for 75 minutes. A double-walled oven, inside chamber 19" × 17.5" × 15" (W × D × H) of stainless steel and outside mild steel sheet duly powder coated, with proper insulation between the walls. The door contains a glass window of 12" × 8". The air flow characteristics of the fan plenum system shall be suction from the floor of the oven through the wall plenum and exhaust of the air through the fan. Temperature is maintained with a PID controller dual display at 163°C ± 0.5°C. A vertical carriage is supplied to support 8 glass sample containers, which are rotated at 15 ± 0.2 rpm. An orifice 1 mm in diameter is connected to a 7.6 m length of copper tubing and flow meter which controls the airflow at 4000 ml/min, with built-in air compressor. Air is blown into the sample containers at their lowest point of travel by an internal air jet.
